Wachovia Corp ousted Ken Thompson as chief executive of the fourth-largest U.S. bank in the wake of growing legal troubles and loan losses tied to the purchase of a big mortgage lender just before the nation’s housing boom went bust.

Universal Studio fire

At Universal Studios in Burbank, California it’s a big fire. Some studios are burning and this news is on all news channels. Universal Studios it’s in flames. Nobody know why, but the images from there are crazy. More than 100 firemen are trying to stop the big flames. There were also reports of an explosion in the studio’s adjacent amusement park, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Frank Reynoso.

The three-alarm blaze began about 4:45 a.m. PT (7:45 a.m. ET) Sunday and reportedly damaged two “prop” buildings, including a chapel, and a popular ride called the “Cyclone,” Reynoso said.

About 100 city and county firefighters are helping studio staff tackle the flames, which have caused at least one explosion, he said.

No injuries have been reported at the 230-acre site, which saw filming for King Kong and The War of the Worlds.

Helicopters have been dropping water on to the burning structures, and television pictures showed flames leaping into the air as a thick cloud of smoke covered the site.

Harold Ickes

Harold McEwen Ickes was deputy White House chief of staff for President Bill Clinton. He is the son of Harold L. Ickes, who was Secretary of the Interior under Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was the model for the Primary Colors character Howard Fergerson. Since 2005 Ickes has been associated with a progressive data collection and voter file organization called “Data Warehouse” (now Catalist, with Laura Quinn, CEO). He currently serves as Catalist’s President.
Nearly 40 years after attending his first Democratic National Convention, Mr. Ickes — who has survived losing presidential campaigns, grand jury investigations and a tumultuous stint in Bill Clinton’s White House — is back at another campaign. He has a good 30 years of presidential history on nearly everyone in the Clinton campaign headquarters, but he is as sassy and dyspeptic as he was when he worked for Eugene J. McCarthy.

“I’m a little dismayed by the lack of fight on the part of our staff,” Mr. Ickes, the assistant to the campaign manager, scolded an audience of Clinton staffers dispirited after Mrs. Clinton’s losses last week, before beginning a roll call of the presidential campaigns he had helped win and lose.

Ickes is a political strategist working on Hillary Clinton’s campaign in the 2008 presidential election. The Clinton campaign should focus on winning pledged delegates as a result of elections, not these say-or-do-anything-to-win tactics that could undermine Democrats’ ability to win the general election,” Plouffe added.

Robert Wexler is an American politician from the U.S. state of Florida. He has served as a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1997, representing Florida’s 19th congressional district.

Congressman Wexler endorsed Sen. Barack Obama as a candidate for the 2008 Presidential election. On 31 May 2008 he spoke at the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting on behalf of the Obama campaign. Robert Wexler argued for a reinstatement of both pledged and superdelegates from the State of Florida to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, with both exercising a half vote at the Convention. Stan Romanke - alien

No, my politically inclined friends not those kind of aliens. The kind of alien I’m talking about does not cut a hole in a border fence and sneak across with the help of a “coyote,” settling down in LA and immediately becoming a drain on government services. The Denver man who is pushing a ballot measure to have the city form an “ET Commission” showed video of what he says is an alien Friday morning at a news conference. Reporters were allowed to view the video, but only a still image of it was released to the media. Romanke, who lives in Colorado Springs, allegedly recorded the alien video while living in Nebraska.

The pair has a deal with a documentary company for the rights to the video.

“Not all wrinkly like ET, the extraterrestrial, just youthful, smooth skin, large wide kind of eyes,” said Peckman.

Romanke has posted drawings of the aliens he reportedly sees on his Web site.

A scientist at the University of Colorado told CBS4 life elsewhere in the Universe is possible, but hard to prove.

Lorenzo Odone Death

Lorenzo Odone was 30 years old and lived in Washington. Twenty five years ago he was diagnosed with an incurable disease and given less than two years to live. Lorenzo Odone, whose parents’ battle to save him from a nerve disease was the subject of the movie “Lorenzo’s Oil,” died on Friday. He was 30.

At 5, Lorenzo was found to have adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare hereditary children’s disease. He was given only a few years to live.

Augusto Odone and his wife, Michaela, formulated a blend of erucic and oleic acids found in cooking oils that they said helped their son fight the disease.

A study published in 2005 said that the oil might delay the disease in boys in which it had not yet caused symptoms.

In the 1992 film, Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte portrayed Lorenzo’s parents. Ms. Odone died of lung cancer in 2000.

Alegerile locale din Romania, din anul 2008, vor fi cele mai urmarite din istoria tarii. Campania electorala a fost mai indarjita ca oricand, deoarece orice primar, consilier sau presedine judetean, va avea in mana miliarde de euro, cu care va putea modernizeze judetul fiecaruia.

Curtea Constitutionala va confirma rezultatele alegerilor locale. “Situaţia politică din România este, în mare măsură, încorporată în turbulenţele recente legate de cursul de schimb, prin aprecierile investitorilor legate de fundamentele relativ slăbite ale economiei, amplificate de politica fiscală şi cea de venituri, nepotrivite”, a declarat agenţiei MEDIAFAX Marko Mrsnik, analist al Standard & Poor’s Rating Services. Presedintele Traian Basescu (foto) a facut, joi, un apel catre alegatori sa se prezinte la vot pentru a-si alege primarii, consilierii locali si judeteni si presedintii de consilii judetene. Seful statului a afirmat ca nu se poate, pe de o parte, sa nu te implici in decizie prin participarea la vot, iar, pe de alta parte, sa iti manifesti nemultumirea. In acest context, presedintele a anuntat ca se va prezenta, duminica, la vot inca de la prima ora. entru alegerea preşedintelui Consiliului Judeţean se va organiza un singur tur de scrutin, pe data de 1 iunie. Dacă, spre exemplu, se vor prezenta 10 candidaţi, acela care va reuşi să obţină cel mai mare număr de voturi va deveni automat preşedinte al Consiliului Judeţean, chiar dacă a fost votat de mai puţin de 50% din numărul de persoane prezente la vot. Doar în cazul, cu totul excepţional, în care doi candidaţi obţin exact acelaşi număr de voturi, se va organiza şi turul doi.

Pentru aceste alegeri s-a stabilit că o persoană nu poate candida, în acelaşi timp, pentru funcţia de preşedinte al Consiliului Judeţean şi pentru cea de primar, întrucât ambele tipuri de alegeri sunt uninominale, iar o eventuală alegere a unui candidat în ambele funcţii ar determina declanşarea imediată a alegerilor anticipate.
În plus, se introduce şi posibilitatea candidaţilor independenţi de a candida la preşedinţia consiliului judeţean. Pentru funcţiile de primari lucrurile rămân neschimbate. Pe 1 iunie va avea loc primul tur de scrutin. În cazul în care unul dintre candidaţi obţine mai mult de 50% din numărul total de voturi valabil exprimate, acesta este declarat câştigător.

În cazul în care pe data de 1 iunie niciunul dintre candidaţii la funcţia de primar nu obţine peste 50% din numărul total de voturi valabil exprimate, se va organiza un al doilea tur de scrutin, pe data de 15 iunie, între primii doi candidaţi cu cele mai multe voturi obţinute.

În acest an, campania electorală va începe în data de 2 mai, la ora 7, şi se va încheia în 31 mai, la ora 7.
