Earth Hour 2008

Earth Hour is an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on the evening of 29 March at 8 pm local time until 9 pm to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions.

It is promoted by World Wide Fund for Nature Australia (WWF), an environmental lobby group, and the Sydney Morning Herald. The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney, Australia between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm on 31 March 2007. The 2007 Earth Hour is estimated to have cut Sydney’s mains electricity consumption by between 2.1% and 10.2% for that hour, with as many as 2.2 million people taking part. A second Earth Hour, in 2008, is planned to be an international event held in Sydney, many partner cities, and individuals around the world participating.
City of Sydney and its Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, helped to make Earth Hour 2008 an international event.[1]

Earth Hour has also received the backing of search engine giant, Google. From 12:00 AM on March 29, 2008 till the end of that day, Google tuned their homepage to a black background. According to their website:

Google users in the United States will notice today that we “turned the lights out” on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don’t do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.

Earth Hour 2008 will include the following “partner cities” and some surrounding areas.

Hot Lap Dance Club Injury

A New York businessman claims in a lawsuit that he was injured when a stripper giving him a lap dance swivelled and smacked him in the face with the heel of her shoe. Stephen Chang claims in court papers that he was at the Hot Lap Dance Club near Madison Square Garden in Manhattan alone and was getting a paid lap dance when the accident occurred. According to the lawsuit, as the dancer swung around, the heel of her shoe hit him in the eye, causing him “to sustain serious injuries.” Stephen Chang, a securities trader, said in court papers filed Friday that he was at the Hot Lap Dance Club near Madison Square Garden and was getting a paid lap dance when the accident occurred early Nov. 2, 2007.

According to the lawsuit, as the dancer swung around, the heel of her shoe hit him in the eye, causing “serious injuries.”

A man who identified himself as the manager of the Hot Lap Dance Club said he was unaware of the accident or the state Supreme Court lawsuit.

Pi Facts

pi symbolThat the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle is constant (namely, pi) has been recognized for as long as we have written records.

A ratio of 3:1 appears in the following biblical verse:

And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it about. (I Kings 7, 23; II Chronicles 4, 2.)
The first theoretical calculation of a value of pi was that of Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BCE), one of the most brilliant mathematicians of the ancient world. Archimedes worked out that 223/71 < pi < 22/7. Archimedes’s results rested upon approximating the area of a circle based on the area of a regular polygon inscribed within the circle and the area of a regular polygon within which the circle was circumscribed.

Beginning with a hexagon, he worked all the way up to a ploygon with 96 sides!
European mathematicians in the early modern period developed new arithmetical formulae to approximate the value of pi, such as that of James Gregory (1638-1675), which was taken up by Leibniz:

pi/4 = 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + . . . . . . . . . . .

One problem with using this formula to calculate the value of pi is that you would have to add 5 million terms to work out a valueof pi/4 that extends to 6 or 7 decimal places!

In 1706, another mathematician named John Machin developed a refinement on Gregory’s formula, yielding the formula still used today by computer programmers to compute pi:

Machin’s formula: pi/4=4arctan(1/5)-arctan(1/239)

Using this formula, an Englishman named William Shanks calculated pi to 707 places, a labor of many years, which he published in 1873. (Only 527 places were correct, however!)
was introduced by the English mathematician William Jones in 1706, who wrote:

3.14159 =pi

This symbol was adopted by Euler in 1737 and became the standard symbol for pi.
Some people are just crazy about pi!

There are pi poems . . .
There are pieces of music based on the digits of pi . . .
There is a web site where you can find your birthday in pi . . .
There are people who have memorized 1000+ digits of pi . . .
In 1897 the Indiana Legislature tried to legally establish the value of pi . . .
Pi has earned a spot in “The Useless Pages” . . .

F22 Raptor

f22 raptor photoThe old F-117 bombers of the US military are in the process of being mothballed to be entirely replaced by the swift, powerful and stealth enabled F-22 Raptor by Lockheed Martin and Boeing.

The Air Force is on-track to retire the F-117 in April 2008, primarily due to the purchasing and eventual deployment of the more effective F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.

The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is an American fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It is primarily an air superiority fighter, but has multiple capabilities including ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles. The United States Air Force considers the F-22 a critical component of the U.S. strike force.

Faced with a protracted development period, the aircraft was variously designated F-22 and F/A-22 during the three years before formally entering US Air Force service in December 2005, as the F-22A. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and final assembly of the F-22. Program partner Boeing Integrated Defense Systems provides the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and all of the pilot and maintenance training systems.

The F-22 is claimed by several sources to be the world’s most effective air superiority fighter. The US Air Force claims that the F-22 cannot be matched by any known or projected fighter aircraft. Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Air Marshal Angus Houston, said in 2004 that the “F-22 will be the most outstanding fighter plane ever built.
The US Congress upheld the ban on F-22 Raptor foreign sales during a joint conference on 27 September 2006. After talks in Washington in December 2006, the US DoD reported the F-22 would not be available for foreign sale.

Following the victory of the Australian Labor Party in the 2007 national election, the new government ordered a review of plans to procure the F-35 and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. This review will include an evaluation of the F-22’s suitability for Australia; moreover, Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has stated: “I intend to pursue American politicians for access to the Raptor”. In February 2008, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he had no objection to sale of the Raptor to Australia, but Congress would have to change the law.

The F-22 has been featured in numerous books, such as Tom Clancy’s Debt of Honor (1994) and Fighter Wing (1995) as well as Clive Cussler’s Dark Watch (2005).

The F-22 made its first major Hollywood debut in the 2007 film “Transformers” as the form taken by the Decepticon character Starscream. The movie crew was allowed to film actual Raptors in flight, unlike previous computer generated appearances, because of the military’s support of director Michael Bay. The Raptors were filmed at Edwards Air Force Base. The F-22 has also been featured in the trailers for Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr.

Transatlantic Tunnel

A transatlantic tunnel is a theoretical tunnel which would span the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe and would carry mass transit of some type—trains are envisioned in most proposals. Using advanced technologies, speeds of 300 to 5,000 mph (500 to 8,000 km/h) are envisioned.

Plans for such a tunnel have not progressed beyond the conceptual stage, and no one is actively pursuing such a project. Most conceptions of the tunnel have it between the United States and the United Kingdom. The main barriers to constructing such a tunnel are cost—as much as $12 trillion—and the limits of current materials science. Existing major tunnels, such as the Channel Tunnel and Seikan Tunnel, despite using less expensive technology than proposed for the Transatlantic tunnel, struggle financially. A Transatlantic Tunnel is 215 times longer than the longest current tunnel and would cost perhaps 3000 times as much.

Imagine Living in New York and working in London, with a commute time between the cities of less than an hour. A 3,100-mile-long transatlantic tunnel is the theoretical floating tunnel which would span the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe. In 2003, the Discovery Channel’s show Extreme Engineering aired a program entitled “Transatlantic Tunnel,” which discusses the proposed tunnel concept in detail. Yesterday, it was made available on YouTube.

With current-day materials and building techniques its construction would take a lifetime (or more) to complete—not to mention over 12-trillion dollars. Given the state of terrorism-related fears, I’m sure that a project of this type will never materialize. Too juicy and unprotected this Western target would be for extremists. But who knows, with the way technology will move along this century, we might be starting to teleport things by the time something like this would be nearing completion. And travel (as we know it today) would be forever changed.
Here you can view detailed plan for transatlantic tunnel, from Discovery.

Mongolian Death Worm

mongolian death wormThe Mongolian Death Worm, known to Mongolia’s nomadic tribesmen as the allghoi khorkhoi (sometimes given as allerghoi horhai or olgoj chorchoj) or ‘intestine worm’ for its resemblance to a sort of living cow’s intestine. It is said to be red in colour, and is sometimes described as having darker spots or blotches, and sometimes said to bear spiked projections at both ends. They are said to be thick bodied and between 2 and 5 feet long. It is described as a fat, bright red worm, 2 to 5 feet long (0.6 to 1.5 meters).[citation needed] The local name is allghoi (or orghoi) khorkhoi (хорхой) which means “blood filled intestine worm,” because it is reported to look like the intestine of a cow. There are a number of extraordinary claims by Mongolian locals - such as the ability of the worm to spew forth a yellow poison that is lethal on contact, and its purported ability to kill at a distance by means of electric discharge. However, there are no known reliable sightings. Some believe the worm is actually a reptile, legless lizard, or arthropod because of the dry climate in which it lives. The colour yellow is said to attract the worm.
The Mongolian Death Worm is a giant poisonous worm that allegedly lives in the Gobi Desert. It sounds like a sci-fi character, but there have been numerous encounters which support the theory that it actually exists. The worm is believed to be five feet in length and resembles a cow’s intestine. It is usually red in colour and sometimes has spikes protruding from both ends. The worm is highly dangerous and can squirt lethal venom and discharge electric shocks over several feet.

Ivan Mackerle is the head of a Czech Republic team who have searched for the worm three times. During the second expedition Mackerle tried, unsuccessfully, to lure the worm out of the desert using high explosives. He returned in 2004, this time using low flying techniques to film huge stretches of the desert, but the expedition failed to capture any signs of the worm on camera.

Scientists and amateur researchers are intrigued by the idea of a creature that has been reported by Mongolian nomads for hundreds of years. It could be only a matter of time before one of the many expeditions gain proof of its existence.
