Dujiangyan Earthquake

dujiangyanThe children who were considered fortunate escaped with a broken bone or a severed limb. The others, hundreds of them, were carried out to be buried, and their remaining classmates lay crushed beneath the rubble of the schoolhouse.

“There’s no hope for them,” said Lu Zhiqing, 58, as she watched uniformed rescue workers trudge through mud and rain toward the mound of bricks and concrete that had once been a school. “There’s no way anyone’s still alive in there.”

Little remained of the original structure of the school. No standing beams, no fragments of walls. The rubble lay low against the wet earth. Dozens of people gathered around in the schoolyard, clawing at the debris, kicking it, screaming at it. Soldiers kept others from entering.

A man and woman walked away from the rubble together. He sheltered her under an umbrella as she wailed, “My child is dead! Dead!”

As dawn crept across this shattered town on Tuesday, it illuminated rows and rows of apartment blocks collapsed into piles, bodies wedged among the debris, homeless families and their neighbors clustered on the roadside, shielding themselves from the downpour with plastic tarps.

The earthquake originated here in the lush farm fields and river valleys of Sichuan Province, killing almost 10,000 people and trapping thousands more.

One of the most jarring tragedies of the disaster was the school collapse in a suburb of Dujiangyan. At least several hundred children were killed, perhaps as many as 900. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao flew here on Monday to survey the destruction, but he was powerless to ease the suffering of the survivors.

In the center of town, a woman said she had called local government officials 10 times to plead for help in rescuing her son and mother, but no one had come.

So on Tuesday morning, she stood crying before the remains of her apartment building. Her 5-month-old son was still buried in there, as was her 56-year-old mother.

“I was outside when the earthquake hit,” said the woman, Wang Xiaoni, 26. “I ran back even while the ground was still shaking.”

She shook her head. “Who’s going to help them now?”

People wandered up and down the street taking photos with cell phones and digital cameras. “This isn’t even the worst-off area,” one man said.

One block over, the façade of a white six-story residential building had sheared off, leaving one side of the apartments open to the air. Each living room had a television set untouched by the earthquake. But in the cascade of rubble at the foot of the building, a lifeless head and arm stuck out of the debris, and another body could be seen on the other side of the mound of rubble.

Across the street, a young man and his older sister walked out of an apartment building with a red duffel bag and armloads of bedding they stacked on the sidewalk.

“Everything in the apartment was destroyed,” said the man, Ji Yongtao, 27, waving a hand up at the second floor. “We need to find a place to live. We’ll spend the night in a building that was recently built, or on the first floor somewhere. We’re not going back up there.”

Dozens of people had gathered on the sidewalk by a major intersection down the street. They were constructing a huge tent, pulling a tarp over upright wooden poles they had lashed together. This would be their home for the day, and maybe the night, and maybe the next few days and nights.

Busloads of soldiers rode past in the street. But there was no immediate help for the people.

“We left with nothing but the clothes we’re wearing,” said Hu Huojin, 38, cradling her 6-year-old son in her arms. “We don’t dare stay in our homes. We’ll return when we’re told it’s safe to go back. Otherwise, we don’t dare live there.”

She gazed out at the wet street.

“I can’t even remember how long the ground shook,” she said. “It was enormous.”

An elderly couple stood under a store awning on the edge of the tent village. The man held the family dog, Chou Mer, but they had not seen their son, a cab driver, since he left home hours before the earthquake.

“We still haven’t heard from him,” said the mother, Yang Limei, 58. “Last night, we kept calling him, but we couldn’t get through. I don’t know what to do. We can’t even wait for him at home.”

Her husband, Chui Xianchao, 63, said, “The walls are still standing, but everything else fell to the ground.”

Ambulances roared by on the way to the hospitals in Chengdu, the provincial capital. Another bus rolled past carrying soldiers.

The army had appropriated public buses throughout the region, and men wearing green fatigues peered out the windows at the homeless in the street.

“No one’s come to help us yet,” Mr. Chui said. “Those soldiers are going somewhere else.”

A few miles to the south, in front of the collapsed school, a half-dozen soldiers linked hands to form a human blockade in front of the rubble. Two women tried to push their way through. The soldiers did not budge.

“There are still children in there, and we can’t help them if you keep trying to get in,” one soldier said.

The only people allowed in were teams of rescue workers and doctors. A group of doctors in white lab coats sat in a bus, waiting their turn to help. Some slept. They said no one had been brought out alive in hours.

Tracy Denise Roberson

  • Author: Razvan Pirnac

  • Date: May 3,2008

Tracy Denise Roberson is a 37 year old woman from Arlington, Texas convicted of manslaughter in the death of lover, Devin LaSalle, a 32-year-old UPS employee.

According to authorities, in late 2006, her husband returned home from a late night card game to find Roberson scantily clad with LaSalle in LaSalle’s pickup truck, at which point Roberson began screaming rape. LaSalle then began to drive away but Roberson’s husband, Darrell Roberson, shot him as he fled, killing him. Darrell Roberson was initially charged with the murder but later acquitted by a grand jury. On May 3rd, 2008, Tracy Denise Roberson was convicted of manslaughter and could face between 2 and 20 years in prison. The prosecution cited a text message sent to LaSalle from Roberson inviting him to the residence that night. The defense attempted to cite Darrell Roberson’s jealousy as the motive for the kiilling, but called no witnesses.

The couple has 3 children.

A Texas woman who caused her lover’s shooting death by falsely crying rape was convicted Friday of involuntary manslaughter.

Tracy Denise Roberson, 37, cried a bit when the verdict was announced. The punishment phase was set for Monday, and she faces two to 20 years in prison.

In late 2006, Darrell Roberson came home from a late-night card game to find his scantily clad wife with another man in a pickup truck in the driveway. Tracy Roberson was with her lover but cried rape, and her husband fired four shots into the truck as Devin LaSalle drove off, killing him.

Darrell Roberson initially was arrested, but a murder charge was later dropped and a grand jury indicted Tracy Roberson instead.
During her three-day trial, defense attorneys called no witnesses but blamed LaSalle’s death on Darrell Roberson’s jealousy and rage.

But prosecutors placed all the blame on Tracy Roberson, showing evidence of the affair with LaSalle, 32, and a text message in which she invited him to her house that evening.

Starbucks Free Coffee

Starbucks Corp. is introducing a new coffee Tuesday and will give away cups of its new Pike Place Roast brew beginning at 9 a.m.

The new coffee is named after the location of Starbucks’ first store, which opened in Seattle’s Pike Place Market in 1971.

According to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, the new brew was created after the Seattle coffee giant (Nasdaq: SBUX) received input from 1,000 customers. He added that Pike Place Roast will be the chain’s first coffee bearing a mark that the coffee is purchased “ethically” from sources.

Starbucks has dozens of Triangle locations.
Visit any participating U.S. Starbucks store on Tuesday, April 8 at 9 a.m. Pacific Time (12 p.m. Eastern Time) and Starbucks will give all customers a complimentary short (8 oz.) cup of the new Pike Place Roast™ to enjoy as they participate in a simultaneous, nationwide, coast-to-coast, coffee tasting conducted by Starbucks coffee experts.
Pike Place Roast will also be the first Starbucks coffee bearing a new symbol the company created with Conservation International, showing that all beans are purchased from suppliers that meet high workplace and environmental standards, such as paying pickers well and requiring coffee to be grown in the shade without use of pesticides.

Schultz has two cameos planned for Tuesday: first at a replica of the Pike Place store Starbucks is putting up in Manhattan’s Bryant Park, then back in Seattle Tuesday evening at the actual Pike Place cafe.

Carla Bruni Sarkozy Nude

carla bruni nude Auction house Christie’s is to sell photographs of former model Bruni-Sarkozy, taken by Michel Comte in 1993, in New York next month, The Associated Press reported Tuesday. The agency quoted the French president’s office as saying the sale is a private matter.

The UK media has covered the president’s courtship of Bruni-Sarkozy and subsequent marriage in depth, with several using her visit as reason to reprint images from her modeling career.

Many observers in France see the presidential trip as a bid by Sarkozy to regain some of the popularity that saw him elected last May. Le President “Bling Bling” arrived in Britain last night, accompanied by his glamorous wife, former supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy but stripped of his accoutrements: the aviator Ray-Bans, the Rolex watch and jogging pants, which have been locked away in the Elysee Palace at the urging of presidential aides.Nicolas Sarkozy instead landed at Heathrow a man determined to regain his image as a statesman — and his approval ratings — during this sojourn with the Queen at Windsor Castle. They were met on the tarmac yesterday by Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Yesterday, Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy was dressed demurely in high-necked, buttoned up and belted grey coat, gloves and a small Jackie Kennedy-style beret.

Mr Sarkozy called for a “new Franco-British brotherhood”, adding that the two countries should work “hand in glove”.

Kirsten Ann Kinley

For the third time in a month and a half, a Howard County teacher is accused of sexually abusing a student. Police say the new charges are against Kirsten Ann Kinley, a 27-year-old teacher at Marriott’s Ridge High. The lawsuit lists as defendants the teacher, Kirsten Ann Kinley, who pleaded guilty in August to having inappropriate sexual contact with the teen; the school board; the principal at Kinley’s former school; and the state. Kinley, 28, pleaded guilty to a third-degree sexual offense for having sexual contact with the plaintiff at her Columbia apartment in late 2004 and early 2005. Kinley, who was arrested in February 2007, had been a special-education teacher in Howard County since 2002 and had worked at Marriotts Ridge High in Marriottsville.
Teacher Kirsten Ann Kinley is now free on $75,000 bond. Police say her accuser said he met her through a friend.

Lebron and Giselle on Vogue

lebron giselle The Cleveland Cavaliers’ superstar will appear on the April cover of Vogue, joining actors Richard Gere and George Clooney as the only men to do so in the influential fashion magazine’s 116-year history. Wearing a tank top, shorts and sneakers from his own Nike clothing line, James appears on the cover dribbling a basketball and screaming as if in game mode while throwing one arm around supermodel Gisele Bundchen with Tom Brady nowhere to be found. The pairing of the All-Star forward and the runway icon was shot in January by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz in James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio. “It’s pretty good,” James said Thursday night before the Cavs’ game in Washington. “Me being a big guy and a big supporter of fashion, to be on the cover with Gisele, on the cover of the biggest fashion magazine ever — it’s pretty good.” Vogue is featuring athletes and models in an annual issue devoted to size and shape. The 6-foot-9 James and 5-foot-11 Bundchen, who dates Patriots star quarterback Brady, were a natural pairing. “Nobody says more about fashion size and shape than Gisele and LeBron,” Vogue spokesman Patrick O’Connell said. “LeBron is an amazing star and athlete that has crossed over into a cultural phenomena.” Bundchen wasn’t intimated by James’ frame.

“He doesn’t really make you feel small, even though he is big,” she says in the magazine. “I think my leg is like the size of his shoe.”

The James-Bundchen duo is one of several athlete-model pairings featured in the issue. Others include swimmer Michael Phelps with Caroline Trentini, snowboarder Shaun White with Daria Werbowy; and speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno with Doutzen Kroes. Being on the cover of a sports magazine is nothing new to James, who first appeared on Sports Illustrated’s front as a 17-year-old high school junior in 2002 next to the presumptuous title of “The Chosen One.” He is currently one of 11 athletes appearing on the cover of ESPN The Magazine’s 10th anniversary issue.

However, as his popularity and visibility broaden, James has recently been featured on the covers of Fortune, Men’s Health and Black Enterprise. With the Vogue cover, James following in the footsteps of Gere, who appeared with Cindy Crawford in 1992, and Clooney, who also appeared with Bundchen in 2000.

Basketball player LeBron James and supermodel Gisele Bündchen will mug for the cover of Vogue’s shape issue, according to the New York Post. This would break all the rules of a Vogue cover. Seldom does editrix Anna Wintour put on her cover: (a) more than one model, (b) a man, (c) a person of color. We looked back at ten years of Vogue covers and compiled a list and images of these three rare instances after the jump. We also discovered Gisele was the last lady to appear with a man (George Clooney) on the cover, proving life is just not fair.
