Dawn Stensland and Larry Mendte lead a charmed life. They each anchor a nightly news show, on channels 29 and 3, respectively, and when they head home in the early mornings, they stroll into a charming, two-story Chestnut Hill pad. Out front, wrought-iron gates mark their semicircle driveway. Out back, a creek winds past an ample back yard that doubles as a playground for Buddy, their playful yet protective 4-year-old white German shepherd.
At last month’s Philadelphia Home Show, dream rooms were designed for local-television figures and were displayed at the Convention Center. Dawn Stensland got together with Bonnie Richman of Karl’s Furniture and dreamt up a room fit for her son. (We’d say Dawn Stensland and Larry did the dreaming, except hadn’t the latter admitted the other day that “Dawn’s been doing everything.”)
Today, much of the furniture from the display is set up in a bedroom right next door to Dawn Stenslandand Larry’s. Family pictures line the windowsills near the trundle bed. Teddy bears — “they’re gifts from Larry. I love teddy bears!” Dawn explained — occupy a corner by the walk-in closet. Baby outfits sit atop the changing table just waiting to be worn. A custom-painted border will soon be added to the walls.
Emmy award-winning journalist Dawn Stensland co-anchors the Fox 29 News at 10. Her nearly two decades of news experience includes two years as co-host of the national show, “CBS News Saturday Morning,” where she interviewed everyone from generals, presidential candidates, movie stars … to yes, Kermit the Frog. Dawn anchored live coverage on CBS News with Dan Rather for several hours the morning that John F. Kennedy Jr.’s plane tragically crashed.
Before joining the FOX 29 news team, Dawn Stensland co-anchored the 5:00 p.m. news at KYW-TV. In addition to her anchor duties, Dawn delivered live nightly reports for their late broadcast. Her live coverage included work at the Republican National Convention, the return of Ira Einhorn, and the Mardi Gras melee on South Street. Dawn was also among the first reporters on the scene of the deadly Pier 34 collapse.
Before coming home to Philadelphia in 1997, Dawn Stensland paid her dues as a reporter and anchor at television stations across the country, including Chicago, Cleveland and Minneapolis.
She’s been a volunteer and honorary chairwoman for local chapter programs of the Salvation Army, March of Dimes WalkAmerica, the American Cancer Society, Girl Scouts “Family Partnership” program and the DARE program. Her mom and grandmother are breast cancer survivors, which is why Dawn has been dedicated to charities that support breast cancer research, such as “Race For the Cure.”
Dawn Stensland and her family are also involved in fundraisers that help abandoned and abused animals. Dawn Stensland lives in Chestnut Hill with her husband, two kids and two dogs.

Dawn:
Just a note to tell you I enjoyed your nightly newcasts with Dave Huddleston. My Mother and I were watching when he signed off last Thursday night. We were both taken aback. Where did Dave go or what is he pursuing.
Thank you
Dear Dawn:
Just wanted you to know I have enjoyed watching you, Dave, Tolley and Rob Guarino for sometime. Once when I was at a famous Chinese restaurant in Cherry Hill, Tolley even sat down at the table I was at and introduced himself to everyone there. That was a great memory. Watching you and that crew always made me feel like even though what you reported might be terrible, your interaction with each other got us through and made things bearable.
(I’m sorry I don’t feel the same about Bolaris or Kerri-Lee, they just seem like they want all the limelight and why does she seem so removed from the bad news she reports, that just comes off so bad to me).
Anyway I wanted to say thanks for the good service these past years and that I won’t be watching Fox any longer due to the recent firings of those other good men. If you go, please let us know where you’ll be…it truly is a shame not to watch you, you are the best!! But it doesn’t feel right anymore now that at 5pm and 10pm it is the Kerri Lee show. Yuck.
Last night I watched channel 17 news for the first time. So that’s where Hurricane Schwartz ended up.
Tell you bosses they are making alot of poor decisions,
I guarantee my opinion is the general consensus because I am the average Joe.
Oh well.
Best wishes to you personally always. Your caring and straightforwardness always came through.
I wonder how you’ll manage to continue to work among the plastic people.
I wanted to explain my decision not to watch Fox news anymore and to say goodbye to you. I will always hold you in high esteem.
Dear Dawn,
I truly watch 29 news at 10:00 because of you. You always seem like you really care about what is going on in the world when you are reporting. I have to admit I am a faithful abc channel 6 news watcher too, But they tend to keep their reporters forever! If you leave the station I will no longer watch 29 news at 10:00! I really think they do not know how to keep their good anchors on. I really enjoyed watching you with Dave Huddleson, you 2 were a good match. I hope things are going well for you. I did pray that things would work out while you were going though your difficult times with your husband. Take care and may God bless you and your family. If you are no longer on this station please let me know . I have not seen you on for a while. Best of luck to you if you aren’t there anymore, if you are gone Fox just lost another news viewer!
