Paul Dirac

Paul Dirac was a British theoretical physicist. Dirac made fundamental contributions to the early development of both quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics. He held the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and spent the last ten years of his life at Florida State University. Among other discoveries, he formulated the so-called Dirac equation, which describes the behavior of fermions and which led to the prediction of the existence of antimatter. Dirac shared the Nobel Prize in physics for 1933 with Erwin Schrödinger, “for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory.”
Paul Dirac was born in Bristol, England and grew up in the Bishopston area of the city. His father, Charles Dirac, was an immigrant from Saint-Maurice in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland.
In 1984 Dirac died in Tallahassee, Florida where he is buried. The Dirac-Hellmann Award at FSU was endowed by Dr Bruce P. Hellmann (Dirac’s last doctoral student) in 1997 to reward outstanding work in theoretical physics by FSU researchers.
The importance of Dirac’s work lies essentially in his famous wave equation, which introduced special relativity into Schrödinger’s equation. Taking into account the fact that, mathematically speaking, relativity theory and quantum theory are not only distinct from each other, but also oppose each other, Dirac’s work could be considered a fruitful reconciliation between the two theories.

Dirac’s publications include the books Quantum Theory of the Electron (1928) and The Principles of Quantum Mechanics (1930; 3rd ed. 1947).

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1930, being awarded the Society’s Royal Medal and the Copley Medal. He was elected a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1961.
First, and above all for Dirac, the logic that led to the theory was, although deeply sophisticated, in a sense beautifully simple. Much later, when someone asked him (as many must have done before) “How did you find the Dirac equation?” he is said to have replied: “I found it beautiful.” Second, it agreed with precise measurements of the energies of light emitted from atoms, in particularly where these differed from ordinary (non-relativistic) quantum mechanics.
Many physicists have spoken of Dirac with awe. John Wheeler, referring to the sharp light of his intelligence, said “Dirac casts no penumbra.” Niels Bohr said: “Of all physicists, Dirac has the purest soul.” He is also reported as saying (I cannot now find this quotation): “Dirac did not have a trivial bone in his body.”

The mathematician Mark Kac divided geniuses into two classes. There are the ordinary geniuses, whose achievements one imagines other people might emulate, with enormous hard work and a bit of luck. Then there are the magicians, whose inventions are so astounding, so counter to all the intuitions of their colleagues, that it is hard to see how any human could have imagined them. Dirac was a magician.

google street view

The revolutionary project – which has raised serious privacy fears - already covers more than 50 US cities, and mapping has reportedly taken place in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The internet giant is reluctant to discuss future plans, but its camera cars have been spotted in Italy and Spain this year, and experts believe it is only a matter of time before Street View arrives in Britain.

Street View differs from the popular Google Earth service in that it offers users a close-up perspective of cities as if they are walking along the streets.

The images are obtained from specially-fitted cars that drive along roads taking panoramic 360 degree recordings of everything they find – from customers stepping out of shops, to children playing in front gardens, to couples lounging in parks.

Google Street View: Private moments captured

Google Street View, the eye-level mapping service that lets billions of web users peek into gardens and through front windows, has its sights set on you. The sedan with the Google logo and the mounted periscope cameras was probably trolling area streets in the fall, maybe earlier. The process of capturing thousands of 360-degree images over and over probably took a few weeks, maybe longer. And it almost certainly took several cars, maybe more, over a couple of passes.

Those are the semi-clear details about how and when Google Street View - the latest creation by the Internet juggernaut that allows ground-level views of hundreds of streets, landscapes and attractions across the country - came to the St. Louis region. For Google, the confusion about how and when it puts together Street View is nothing new.

Google has never said how or when it captured the photos for Street View, which first went online in May 2007 and featured only New York City, Miami, San Francisco, Denver and Las Vegas streets.

Google Maps has for years used satellite photos to augment its maps. Although “Street View” is along those lines, the vantage point is not outer space, but up-close and personal at ground level.

Internet users can enter a specific address in the city, click on the “Street View” icon and then see a picture from the exact location. The view can be rotated a full 360 degrees, panned up and down, or moved to another point up or down the street.

So far, around 32 US cities have been photographed by the Street View vans. These mobile units stick strictly to public streets, but that hasn’t stopped the service, which launched in 2007, attracting widespread criticism. One New Yorker, Mary Kalin-Casey, contacted the BoingBoing technology blog to complain that when she Googled her address, a detailed picture of her house popped up, showing her tabby cat standing at the window of her home. “I’m all for mapping, but this feature literally gives me the shakes,” she told the site. “I feel like I need to close all my curtains now.”

Even the Pentagon has fallen victim to Google’s long lens. The US military asked Google to remove pictures of the Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas. Photographs of the base taken from the public highway showed the exact position of guards, control points, barriers, and security facilities and posed “a risk to our force protection efforts”, according to a spokesman for the US Northern Command.

Typhoon Fengshen

  • Author: admin

Navy and coast guard ships battled huge waves and strong winds Sunday to reach a stranded ferry carrying more than 740 people after Typhoon Fengshen battered the country killing 17.

Rescue vessels aborted an initial attempt Saturday to get to the MV Princess of Stars after it ran aground near Sibuyan island, but efforts resumed amid stormy weather Sunday, coast guard chief Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said.

Typhoon Fengshen lashed the central Philippines for about four hours Saturday, setting off landslides and floods, knocking out power, and blowing off roofs from houses.

Packing sustained winds of 74 miles per hour and gusts of up to 93 mph, the Typhoon Fengshen shifted course Sunday to the northwest and battered the capital Manila at dawn, chief government forecaster Nathaniel Cruz said. Typhoon Fengshen has killed 155 people in the Philippines in a torrent of flashfloods and landslides, the head of the Philippines Red Cross, Richard Gordon, told local radio on Sunday.

The death toll from the typhoon was earlier pegged at around 85. It could rise sharply after a ferry with more than 700 people on board capsized off an island in the central Philippines with few survivors found so far.
Typhoon “Fengshen”, locally called “Frank”, made landfall in east Philippine province of Samar on Friday afternoon and is moving northwest across the central Philippines, the state weather forecast bureau said.

Typhoon Fengshen is expected to move west northwest at 19 km per hour, with maximum winds of 140 kph and gustiness of up to 170 kph,the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) said in its 5:00 p.m. bulletin.

The weather bureau said the Typhoon Fengshen is forecast to hover over the eastern part of Luzon island by Sunday afternoon.

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered local governments to prepare for potential floods and landslides.

PAGASA earlier cautioned residents living in the low-land areas to keep vigilant against surging sea level and big waves.

Heavy rainfalls and strong winds in central Philippines forced Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to scrap a scheduled trip to Capiz province on Friday, local media reported.

PAGASA previously predicted that more than 20 cyclones to hit the Philippines this year, 14 of which will be intensified into typhoons.

Floods and landslides caused by tropical storms kill hundreds of people, sometimes thousands, in the Philippines every year.

At least 229 people are confirmed dead and at least six missing after Typhoon Fengshen ravaged the central and southern Philippines, Red Cross and civil defence officials said today.

The toll does not include those dead or missing from a ferry that sank in the central Philippines with about 747 people aboard. Four people have been confirmed dead and there are four survivors from that accident.

The central province of Philippines has suffered the heaviest losses after being hit by the typhoon yesterday, with 101 dead, Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon said.

Other fatalities were recorded in the neighbouring provinces of Romblon, Cotabato, Antique and Capiz, Gordon added.

Fears are growing for more than 700 people on board a ferry which has capsized in the central Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Fengshen.

A rescue ship that managed to reach the vessel more than 24 hours after it lost radio contact reported no sign of life.

There are only four known survivors - one told local media that passengers had just minutes to abandon ship.

The Red Cross estimates some 155 people have died across the country in floods and landslides caused by the storm.

The vessel left Manila on Friday en route to Cebu, and according to its owners, Sulpicio Lines, contact was lost at about 1230 (0430 GMT) on Saturday.

MV Princess of Stars had been cleared to leave the port of Manilla on Friday morning, before the typhoon changed direction and began to head in the ship’s direction.

The captain attempted to take the ship into more sheltered waters but the engine failed and it was left stranded, according to the coastguard. Radio contact was then lost.

A police speedboat that has reached the wreck site reported that it had overturned, and there was a large hole in the centre of the ship.

However rescuers have been unable to approach because of the rough seas.

President Gloria Arroyo, who is traveling to the US for an official visit, has criticised the authorities for failing to stop the vessel from sailing in the treacherous conditions.

Typhoon Fengshen has claimed at least 80 other lives across the country, submerging entire communities.

Officials said a ferry was left adrift with over 700 passengers and crew, while in the south, ten people drowned and five were missing after a river burst its banks in Maguindanao province.

In Cotabato City, a man and a child were buried in a landslide at a rubbish dump, police said. Five other people also drowned.

High School Pregnancy Pact

  • Author: admin

The small town of Gloucester, Massachusetts is up in arms after school officials believe a group of 17 girls made a pact to become pregnant together. All of the girls involved in the alleged Gloucester high school pregnancy pact were 16-years-old or younger. Officials and psychiatrists have weighed in as to why the teens may have entered into such a pact. The fishing community of Gloucester has been facing hard economic times and becoming pregnant, according to one theory, would give the girls “status.” Another theory looks at the connection between mother and daughter. As summer vacation begins, 17 girls at Gloucester High School are expecting babies—more than four times the number of pregnancies the 1,200-student school had last year. Some adults dismissed the statistic as a blip. Others blamed hit movies like Juno and Knocked Up for glamorizing young unwed mothers. But principal Joseph Sullivan knows at least part of the reason there’s been such a spike in teen pregnancies in this Massachusetts fishing town. School officials started looking into the matter as early as October after an unusual number of girls began filing into the school clinic to find out if they were pregnant. By May, several students had returned multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and on hearing the results, “some girls seemed more upset when they weren’t pregnant than when they were,” Sullivan says. All it took was a few simple questions before nearly half the expecting students, none older than 16, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Then the story got worse. “We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy,” the principal says, shaking his head. It is a shame those two lost their jobs over it, but a lack of easily available contraceptives is clearly not what got these girls where they are. They didn’t want birth control pills, they wanted babies. But why? School superintendent Christopher Farmer blames the economy. The blue-collar fishing town has seen an economic downturn over the past decade and many jobs have disappeared overseas. “Families are broken,” he says. “Many of our young people are growing up directionless.”

There may be something to that theory, but I suspect it is much more complicated than that. Back in my day, there was a certain stigma attached to teen mothers. Pregnant girls did not attend regular classes and they certainly didn’t bring their kids to school with them. Is it possible that this school, and others like it, encourage teens to have children by lessening the consequences? Or is this just an extreme case of group-think in girls too young to know better?

In Gloucester, the 1,200-student school administered 150 pregnancy tests to students in the past academic year. The school forbids the distribution of condoms and other contraception without parental consent — a rule that prompted the school’s doctor and nurse to resign in protest in May.

“But even if we had contraceptives, that pact shows that if they wanted to get pregnant, they will get pregnant. Whether we distribute contraceptives is irrelevant,” said Verga.

Roman Sebrle - World’s Greatest Athlete

  • Author: admin

  • Date: Jun 20,2008

roman sebrleRoman Šebrle (born 26 November 1974 in Lanškroun) is an athlete from the Czech Republic. Originally a high-jumper, he competes in decathlon and heptathlon for team Dukla Praha. He is a world record holder in decathlon - in 2001 in Götzis he became the first decathlete ever to achieve over 9000 points and set the record at 9026 points, succeeding his compatriot Tomas Dvorak, who scored 8994 points two years earlier. A panel of experts convened by the Wall Street Journal in 2008 also ranked Šebrle as the world’s greatest athlete.

One of the continual questions in sports that annoys me to no end is ‘Who is the greatest athlete currently in sports?’

Look, there is no answer. I don’t care how many eggheads you put in one room, or how many math equations you do, it simply isn’t going to happen. There is no correct answer.

But don’t let my totally rational logic fool you. There are plenty of people out there who would love to argue this until their face turns blue. And apparently the Wall Street Journal is one of them.

Anyway, the Journal put together a panel of sports experts and had them grade athletes on, well, a lot of stuff.  Speed; vision and reflex; stamina and recovery; coordination and flexibility; power, strength and size; and success and competitiveness. The final category examined success—records held and victories—as well as competitiveness, based on the sport’s popularity. Soccer, for example, the world’s most popular sport, was judged the most competitive.

Just so you know, Yale statistician John Emerson helped normalize the scores so no single panelist could exert undue influence. I could care less.

Anyway, here’s what they came up with. The greatest athletes in the world, from 1 to 10 are:

1. Roman Sebrle (Track and Field)
2. LeBron James (NBA)
3. Floyd Mayweather (Boxer)
4. LaDainian Tomlinson (NFL)
5. Roger Federer (Tennis)
6. Sidney Crosby (NHL)
7. Liu Xiang (Track and Field)
8. Jeremy Wariner (Track and Field)
9. Ronaldinho (Soccer)
10. Alex Rodriguez (MLB)

USA’s respected financial publication The Wall Street Journal recently drew together a panel of 5 judges, to study the achievements of 79 male sportsmen across all sports, and decided that Czech Roman Sebrle, the World Decathlon record holder, is currently the world’s greatest sportsman.

While the study was “not completely scientific” as The Wall Street Journal itself admits, it asked its panel to rank the sportsmen based on six criteria: speed; vision and reflex; stamina and recovery; coordination and flexibility; power, strength and size; and success and competitiveness.

The final category examined success - records held and victories - as well as competitiveness, based on the sport’s popularity. Soccer, for example, the world’s most popular sport, was judged the most competitive.

Longest Day of the Year

  • Date: Jun 20,2008

On or around June 21 each year, the rays of the sun will be perpendicular to the Tropic of Cancer at 23°30′ North latitude. This day is the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

On this day, the earth’s “circle of illumination” will be from the Arctic Circle on the far side of the earth (in relation to the sun) to the Antarctic Circle on the near side of the earth. The equator receives twelve hours of daylight, there’s 24 hours of daylight at the North Pole and areas north of 66°30′ N, and there’s 24 hours of darkness at the South Pole and areas south of 66°30′ S.

June 20-21 is start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere but simultaneously the start of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s also the longest day of sunlight for places in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest day for cities south of the equator.

However, June 20-21 is not the day when the sun rises earliest in the morning nor when it sets latest at night.
Every June 21st hundreds of people go to Stonehenge to watch the sun rise. The sun shines on one famous stone - the Heel stone. For the Druids this is a very important moment of the year.

Druid celebrations also take place on Midsummer’s Eve. Bonfires are lit to show respect for the Sun God, whose power is greatest at the Summer Solstice. The fires also represent an attempt to ward off the coming winter. Practice of this ancient ritual, which also includes a Summer Solstice Circle Dance, is now mainly confined to Cornwall, the West Country, and London’s Hampstead Heath.
The two solstices can be distinguished by different pairs of names, depending on which feature one wants to stress.

* Summer solstice and winter solstice are the most common names. However, these can be ambiguous since seasons of the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere are opposites, and the summer solstice of one hemisphere is the winter solstice of the other.
* Northern solstice and southern solstice indicate the direction of the sun’s movement. The northern solstice is in June on Earth, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere, and the southern solstice is in December, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere.
* June solstice and December solstice are an alternative to the more common “summer” and “winter” terms, but without the ambiguity for which hemisphere they are intended. They are still not universal, however, as not all people on Earth use a solar-based calendar where the solstices occur every year in the same month (as they do not in the Hebrew calendar, for example), and the names are also not useful for other planets (Mars, for example), even though these planets do have seasons.
* First point of Cancer and first point of Capricorn. One disadvantage of these names is that, due to the precession of the equinoxes, the astrological signs where these solstices are located no longer correspond with the actual constellations.
* Taurus solstice and Sagittarius solstice are names that indicate in which constellations the two solstices are currently located. These terms are not widely used, though, and until December 1989 the first solstice was in Gemini, according to official IAU boundaries.
* The Latin names Hibernal solstice (winter), and Aestival solstice (summer) are sometimes used.
June 21 is called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and simultaneously the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Around December 21 the solstices are reversed and winter begins in the northern hemisphere.

On June 21, there are 24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle (66.5° north of the equator) and 24 hours of darkness south of the Antarctic Circle (66.5° south of the equator). The sun’s rays are directly overhead along the Tropic of Cancer (the latitude line at 23.5° north, passing through Mexico, Saharan Africa, and India) on June 21.
